Dear colleagues, distinguished participants,
I warmly thank Hillary Clinton and Ahmed Davutoglu for their leadership in promoting this initiative and for the comprehensive approach it takes. The presence here today of representatives of the victims is an added value of extraordinary importance.
Terrorism requires an encompassing vision that includes social prevention measures, intelligence gathering, investigative and judicial actions, and reintegration and rehabilitation. We believe that our common policies should all pivot on values: first and foremost, human dignity.
First of all it is essential to bring terrorists before justice to stand fair trial in accordance with international principles and in the full respect for the fundamental rights of the individuals. Second, we must work within our own societies to prevent violence, extremism, and hatred. In this respect it will be crucial to exploit the positive potential of the new media, which is often used for terrorist propaganda, so that it many instead convey positive messages from political and religious leader in favor of dialogue, respect for diversity, and human values.
Integration and intercultural dialogue policies will have to be significantly improved. The objective is to promote the supremacy of life, human dignity, and fundamental freedoms and liberties. In our schools; in the action of law enforcement agencies; in judicial matters; and in international relations.
In the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s,
experienced brutal domestic terrorism and now we stand beside all peoples who have suffered from violence, intolerance, and extremism. We will therefore enthusiastically support the crucial initiative presented today with all the means at our disposal. Italy
Once again I thank you for the invitation and congratulate you on the launch of the global Counter-Terrorism Forum.
