2014 was a complicated year for global stability and human security. In a year where the number of refugees and internally displaced people reached its peak since the end of the Second World War, the world witnessed the continuation of conflict and violence: the rise of radical groups in Africa and the Middle East; the internationalization of the war in Syria; a crude conflict at the gates of the European Union in Ukraine; a growing divide between Russia, the European Union and the United States and its destabilizing consequences; an increase on the terrorist threat; continued organized criminality in Latin America; and an overall escalation of global conflict rhetoric.
2014 was also a year for hope, however. Local and international peace efforts by civil society and State actors continue demonstrating that peace is within reach. Dialogue efforts, peace building initiatives and the defense of human rights and equality continued being the main concern for millions of activists, politicians, social workers, peace builders, cooperation workers and regular citizens. In this context, an initiative to boost global discussion among leaders and cooperation for peace arises: the Global Forum on Shared Societies inspired by the Nizami Ganjavi International Foundation
On 28-29 April 2015, international leading figures in global politics convened in game changing event in Baku to debate the real current trends in international relations and human security. The meeting provided a space for 100+ current and former Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers and leading scholars experts to assess the current state of the world, the most pressing threats to international security and peace, and elaborate concrete steps for todays leadership to overcome divisions. This Summit in Baku has instigated a global discussion to advocate for necessary steps to be taken to boost trust and cooperation among global powers.
