(ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, 21 OCTOBER - Franco Frattini, former Italian foreign minister and vice-president of the European Commission, arrived in Belgrade on Monday after accepting the Serbian government's offer to assist Serbia in the EU integration process as a consultant.
I have just arrived in Belgrade, he wrote on Twitter, and announced that he will meet with Serbian ministers and the team that will negotiate for Serbia's EU membership.
Frattin, on October 7, accepted the government's offer to assist Serbia in the EU integration process.
Frattini and other foreign officials will attend Monday's celebration of the fifth anniversary since the establishment of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the leading party in the ruling coalition.
Frattini will perform his duties without any remuneration and through personal contacts with Serbia's First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, Vucic's office released earlier.
"Thanks to his outstanding, years-long, top-level experience in European and world institutions and credibility he enjoys in the international community, Frattini will help the Serbian government in the EU integration process, primarily in relation to Chapters 23 and 24 of membership negotiations," the release reads.
Frattini is of the opinion that the European integration process will not be complete until all Western Balkan countries achieve full-fledged membership.
I see no other alternative. Serbia will one day have to become a full-fledged member of the EU, he said.
At the moment, Frattini chairs the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI), he is one of the most influential European politicians, and he is often referred to as a potential successor to NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. (ANSAmed)
