The former Prime Minister of Belgium, Wilfried Martens, was re-elected today for a new 3-year term as President of the European People’s Party (EPP). President Martens received the overwhelming support of delegates (91%) on the first day of the two-day EPP Congress, which is taking place in Bucharest, Romania and hosted by the PDL and UMDR:
“It is a great honour to be entrusted by the EPP Congress delegates to lead our party for three more years. In this difficult moment for Europe, it is with a heightened sense of duty that I remain dedicated and committed to my political family and to the European project,” Martens underlined.
“My new mandate will face many challenges, but it will be mainly focused on the preparation and launch of EPP’s campaign for the 2014 European elections. In the run-up to these crucial elections, we must increase our efforts to bring the European Union closer to the citizens and to offer them hope and perspective. During the campaign, the EPP and the other European political parties, must engage in a substantial pan-European political debate that, ultimately, will create a genuine European public space. As I have mentioned many times before, the EPP is committed to putting forward again its candidate for President of the European Commission, as it did in the 2004 and 2009 elections, and this candidate will spearhead EPP’s 2014 election campaign,” the EPP President added.
The EPP Congress will continue tomorrow with three Congress sections, followed by speeches from party leaders and EU heads of state and government, as well as the election of the Vice Presidents, Secretary General and Treasurer of the EPP.
